Duration: 40 minutes

Topics:
- functional groups (students should be able to identify classes of functional group present in a structure)
- naming (make sure u know EVERY substituents and how to deal with subtituents inside substituents)
- optical isomers & chiral centre
- Lewis structure
- combustion and Wurtz reaction
- structural (constitutional isomers)
- and of course....the free radical substitution mechanism.
 
Be prepared.

1st test will be held as follows:
Date: 22nd December 2011 (Thursday)
Duration: 1 hour (60 minutes)

Topics:
- classification of alcohol
- name of reactions
- boiling point
- naming (hint: involves cyclic structures and multiple functional groups in a structure)
- Cannizaro, aldol condensation, Grignard reagent, oxidation and reduction.
- visual / chemical tests
- application.

Prepare urself.

CHM301 - Pre-Quiz Review

For quiz on Friday (19.08.2011), pls focus on the following topics:

- nomenclature for carboxylic acids (convert name to structure)

- carboxylic acid properties (boiling point and acidity)

- reactions: Grignard reagent carboxylation, oxidation, salt formation and nucleophilic substitution.

Some of the questions have been reviewed during our previous meeting.

Aldehydes & ketones:

- Nomenclature (combination of several functional groups)

- Visual test

- Reaction: reduction, Cannizaro, Aldol-condensation.

Amines:

- Nomenclature (poly-substituted amine)

- The strength of basicity (effects from EDG and EWG)

- Classification of amines

- Reaction: reduction, Hofmann degradation, ammonia (amine) alkylation

- Application

- Visual test

These are the topics for the test tomorrow:

i. pi & sigma bonds of alkane, alkene, alkyne.

ii. the properties and characteristics of alkane compounds.

iii. reaction for alkane - combustion and halogenation (discuss mechanism)

iv. reaction of alkene and alkyne - addition (Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov's rule), dehydration, hydrogenation with Lindler's cat., oxidation by using different reagents.

v. visual test for unsaturated hydrocarbon.

@Kamalia: The topics u should focus on are: Hess law, the collision theory, and ALL the discussion that we had in class...I will also includes some of the questions from paper CHM159 and CHM201 from previous 3 semesters, which related to the respective chapter. For example, CHM201 paper (April 2011), you shud be able to answer questions from Part A (16, 17, 19) and Part B (6) <------ (HINT!)

All of the questions have been discussed in class....so, do the tutorial and the previous exam papers, and hopefully you'll be rewarded.

The test (which covers the chapter on Thermodynamics and Kinetics) will be held tomorrow during tutorial session. In the mean time, pls post any inquiries in the comment session and I'll try to reply it immediately. Also, try to answer questions from the previous exam papers (CHM159 and CHM201).

i. Lecture: Thursday, 4pm-6pm OR Friday (again, this is not referring to Rebecca Black single), 4pm-6pm

ii. Lab: Wednesday, 10am-12pm OR Friday, 2pm-4pm

You are required to attend one session of lecture and lab respectively as mentioned in your programme outline.
