CHM301 - Quiz 1 (Right after raya)

*Post edited - my bad.

Stuff you need to read:

1. Classification of amine - distinguish primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary amine.

2. IUPAC and common name of amine (aliphatic and aromatic amine).

3. Preparation of amine:
i. Reduction of nitro & amide compounds by using LiAlH4.
ii. Reduction of nitrile compounds by using LiAlH4. Include the preparation of nitrile compound from an alkyl halide.
iii. Hoffmann degradation of amide.

4.  Reaction of amine:
i. Formation of salt (reaction with acidic compounds such as HCl and HBr)
ii. Alkylation of amine / ammonia (reaction of an amine / ammonia with single or excess alkyl halides)

5. Isocyanide test and the Hinsberg test on amine. State the name, reagents and expected observation.

....and Selamat Berpuasa & Selamat Hari Raya :)

CHM301 - 1st test: Topics for review

Please study the following topics for the first test:

1. IUPAC names and structural formula of alcohol, ketone and aldehyde. Consider structures which contain more than 1 class of functional groups.

2. Oxidation reaction of alcohols and aldehydes (ozonolysis or hydroxylation).

3. Reduction reaction of carbonyl groups.

4. Condensation reaction of carbonyl group with hydrazine derivatives.

5. Formation of alcoxide ion / salt from alcohol

6. Reaction of carbonyl group with the Grignard reagent.

7. Visual test:

                      i.        Alcohol (Lucas test / chromic acid test)
ii.        Carbonyl groups (Iodoform test/ Tollen’s test / Brady’s test / Fehling test)

8. The aldol condensation reaction of carbonyl groups.

CHM257 - 2nd test: Topics for review

Please study the following topics for the next test:

1. IUPAC names and structural formula for alkene and alkyne. Practise on the structure which exhibit the geometrical isomerism (cis-trans) and condition in which alkene and alkyne are present in the same structure.

2. Geometrical isomer (cis-trans) in cyclic structure.

3. The dehydration reaction of alcohol to produce alkenes (discuss Saytzeff rule).

4. Formation of the acetylide ion and further reaction with an alkyl halide, R─X.

5. Addition reaction (discuss the Markovnikov rule).

6. The oxidation reaction of alkene. Comparison between ozonolysis and by using KMnO4 acidified (hot) or basic (cold) medium.
